Abstract

1411504 Rock splitting H DARDA 20 June 1973 [20 June 1972] 29351/73 Heading E1F In a rock splitting apparatus in which two members 14, 15 insertable into a bore hole are separable by a hydraulically driven wedge 15, the separable members are so mounted as to be capable of relative longitudinal movement to absorb any differential loading. As shown in Fig 1 portions 14b, 15b of the separable members are relatively movable against restoring springs 14e, 15e in an element 13 secured to the cylinder (not shown) of a hydraulic operating ram. A resilient rubber disc 17 serves to center the separable members which extend between bars 19 restrained from longitudinal displacement, see Fig 2. In the embodiment shown in Fig 4 an element 29, formed from two face to face discs, is rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the drawing, and has slots 29a which are engaged by shoulder portions 24b, 25b of the separable members 24, 25. Restoring springs 24e, 25e act on the shoulder portions and the bearing surfaces of the slots 29a have radii of curvature which increase on either side of the rest position shown. The separable members have a tongue and groove interengagement at their lower end, Fig 7. This arrangement is modified (Figs 9-12, not shown) by the provision of ball bearings engaged between bearing rings on the element 29 and complementary bearing races formed in the element 23; moreover the separable members are formed from relatively thin steel strips one of which engages between the forked ends of the other. In a further embodiment (Figs 13-17, not shown) the discs constituting the rotatable element are held together by bolts: of which two engage in slots in the separable members, and two are acted on by restoring springs. In all cases the sliding contact faces of the wedge and separable members are provided with welded-on hard metal layers for wear resistance.
