Abstract
141,144. Smedley, W. Jan. 24, 1919. Driving-gear. - A shaft; which may be the power shaft of a prime mover, is provided with a crank-pin, which engages a slotted disk revolving eccentrically to the shaft and is connected with means for raising a weight or compressing a spring or fluid, so that energy is stored during the stroke in which the crankpin is at its lesser mean radial distance from the centre of the disk and is given out during the succeeding stroke in which the crank-pin is at its greater mean radial distance. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a crank-pin 3 on a power shaft engages a slotted disk on a shaft 8, which is eccentric to the power shaft and may be provided with a fly-wheel 10, energy being transmitted either directly from the shaft 8 or from the fly-wheel. The crank-pin is connected with a plunger in a water-jacketed cylinder 12, which is in communication with a larger cylinder 13a provided with a fluid inlet 14 and, if desired, with an outlet. A spring controlled plunger may be fitted in the cylinder 13<a> and may be provided with a collar 15<a>, which may be connected by trip mechanism operated by a projection on the cross head so as to be released at any desired time. The power shaft may be provided with two crank-pins in axial alinement each connected with power-storing means. In the Provisional Specification the application of the invention to steam engines, gas engines, and turbines is referred to.
