1411126 Moulding electric storage battery boxes JOSEPH LUCAS (AUSTRALIA) PTY Ltd 26 Oct 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 49523/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] An electric storage battery box of thermoplastic material, with members such as terminal connectors or electrolyte level probes extending through the wall, has such members integrally cast-in during moulding of the box by using a mould with holes through its wall to receive the members. A reciprocable punch is brought down into the mould cavity, the gap between the punch and the mould wall defining the moulding cavity. The members are inserted through the holes in the mould wall and across the gap to abut the punch, and the moulding material is introduced to cast the box, examples of such materials being polypropylene or propyleneethylene copolymer. Preferably the members are each held in a reciprocating jig and are spaced from the sides of the hole in the mould wall, which is recessed, so that moulding material may form therearound, whilst the other end of the member may be provided with a sealing washer to abut against the punch. In an embodiment (Fig. 3) a terminal 6 of lead or lead alloy has flanges 7 and 8 and groove 9 around which the moulding material of the box 11 will form to lock in the terminal. A threaded nut 13 is cast into the terminal body and a jig 14 screws into it to locate it in the mould wall. The inner face of the terminal may have a boss 18 which carries a sealing washer 19, e.g. of a synthetic resin, several examples being given, which abuts against the moulding punch. If the washer is to be retained in the mould wall it is provided with bevelled shoulders 22, whilst if it is to be subsequently withdrawn the shoulders are bevelled inwardly instead to facilitate withdrawal. An electrolyte level probe similar to that described in Australian Specification 444,654 may be provided with a body portion having retaining flanges, as described above, and cast into a box by this method.
