Abstract
1411078 Mixing gases BOC INTERNATIONAL LTD 29 Sept 1972 [1 Nov 1971] 50746/71 Heading B1C Apparatus for supplying oxygen and helium in pre-set fixed proportion to a mixing chamber 28 and thence through a valve 46 to a diving chamber (not depicted) comprises a helium supply line 2 and a selected one of the oxygen supply lines 6, 8, or 10, each having a non- return valve 12, a gas-pressure regulator 14, a pressure-relief valve 16, a device 20 providing a constant downstream gas velocity over a range of pressure differences, and a solenoid valve 22. The pressure regulators 14 reduce the pressures in each line to the same constant value and the device 20 is preferably a sonic nozzle (see Fig 2, not shown) the gas velocity downstream of which is equal to the speed of sound irrespective of variations within a range of pressure differences across the nozzle. The solenoid valves 22 are controlled by devices 34, 36 sensitive to the pressure in the mixing chamber, so that when pressure in the mixing chamber falls owing to demand the valves 22 are opened, and when it rises to the critical valve which could impair the functioning of the sonic nozzle, the valves 22 are closed. The three oxygen lines 6, 8, 10 each provide a different oxygen flow rate so that three helium/ oxygen compositions are available, typically 3%, 5% and 8% oxygen. The supply pressures may be 70-250 bars which are reduced to 60 bars by the regulators 14, and the pressure in the mixing chamber is 27-30 bars.
