Abstract
1410212 Ultrasonic testing of material DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 16 May 1973 [16 May 1972] 22947/72 Heading H4D A method of ultrasonic testing a hot object utilizes an emitter transducer so that ultrasonic energy passes between the transducer and test object, the heat from the object being at least partially prevented from reaching the transducer along the ultrasonic energy path by means of a cooled heat-radiation-absorbent body in said path. Transducers 12 are arranged in a circle (only two transducers being shown) behind a water-cooled annular shield 14. A water cooled metal cone 18 directs the ultrasonic energy 16 via blackened surface 19 on to a hot billet 10. The heat from the billet is absorbed to a large extent by surface 19 so that the transducers are protected. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the transducers are inclined so that the ultrasonic energy is focused to a fine point on surface (11<1>) of the billet. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the transducers direct ultrasonic energy away from the billet on to a parabolic heat absorbing ultrasonic reflector (26) which focuses the energy on to a small point on the surface (11<11>) of the billet (10<11>). Specification 1,410,211 is referred to.
