Abstract

577,939. Directive wireless signalling. DOWSETT, H. M. June 6, 1941, No. 7186. [Class 40 (v)] A beam of rotational symmetry about the axis of a dipole AOB is produced by an elliptical or spherical-elliptical reflector bac having its main focus O at the centre of the dipole and conjugate foci in a ring P centred on the main axis, the radiation from these foci being reflected by the surface de of an inverted cone reflector on the main axis. The generator of the cone may be straight as in Fig. 2, or of parabolic form, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the surface curvature of the cone causing the radiation to be reflected in each axial plane at the required angle of divergence. The dipole and elliptical reflector may be underground, and the conical reflector above ground. The spherical part ba of the reflector bac reflects part of the radiation back through the focus O so that it is in phase with the part of the radiation falling on the elliptical part ac of another part of the reflector riot shown in Fig. 2, which shows' only a half-section of the reflector. The upper part of the reflector bac may be elliptical and the lower part spherical as in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
