Abstract

553,424. Directive wireless signalling. DOWSETT, H. M. April 7, 1942, No. 4573. [Class 40 (v)] For producing a beam over a restricted horizontal angle, apparatus mainly below ground level comprises a vertical dipole A, O, B, Fig. 1, the centre being at one focus of an elliptical reflector c, a, b, the conjugate focus P being at or near ground level. A semi-spherical reflector d, e, f, also having its focus at o, has such a radius that waves falling on it are reflected back through o in phase with those falling on the elliptical mirror. As shown the waves diverge over a vertical angle g, P, k and a horizontal angle of 180 degrees. For producing an equi-signal overlapping beam, two such arrangements close together may be differently modulated and so designed that the beams overlap by, say, 5 degrees as indicated in Fig. 3, the overlap being shown shaded. With this arrangement, there is no sense ambiguity as there is no radiation within the angle 180 degrees - 185 degrees. Three such devices may be arranged to define three courses at an angle of 120 degrees, Fig. 4 (not shown).
