Abstract

599,572. Aerials. SMITH, C. H., BOOKER, H. G., and WOODWARD, P. M. Sept. 18, 1945, No. 24160. [Class 40 (v)] An aerial for a pulse radar system in which energy is transmitted from a point, e.g. an aircraft, to detect objects in a plane not passing through the point, e.g. the surface of the earth, comprises a reflector which is so constructed 'that between certain limiting angles the power transmitted (or received) is proportional to the square of the cosecant of the angle of depression, so that between the limits specified the " illumination " of the surface is uniform. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the reflector consists of a paraboloid divided diametrically in the horizontal plane, with the upper half displaced away from the focus by an eighth of the operating wavelength. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, a reflector plate 15 is located within the reflector at an angle which may be adjusted. By a correct choice of the size and position of the plate the above conditions may be satisfied.
