Abstract

1410211 Ultrasonic testing of materials DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 16 May 1973 [16 May 1972] 22945/72 Heading H4D A method of ultrasonically testing an object includes utilizing a plurality of emitter transducers or a single extended emitter transducer and a reflector disposable so that the emitted ultrasonic energy is directed by the reflector on to a comparatively small area of the test object. In the embodiment shown a power source 1 drives separate transducers 4, 5 via adjustable delays 2a, 3a, the delays enabling the separate ultrasonic beam from the transducers to be adjusted to be in phase and provide an intense combined beam 8a directed by reflector 8 on to test object 9. The ultrasonic beam passing through the object is picked up by receiver 10 and passed via pre-amplifier 11 and narrow band amplifier 12 to analogue storage unit 13. A device 14 is provided for moving the object so that it may be scanned and signals representing the object movement are also fed from device 14 to the storage unit. A cathode-ray tube unit 16 is provided to display the signals. The pulses from source 1 are of a duration long compared to one cycle of the natural frequency of the transducers so that they may reach their natural frequency when pulsed by signals at this frequency. Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown) illustrate further embodiments utilizing a plurality of emitter transducers and a conical, pyramidal or parabolic reflector, the transducers being placed behind a screen (24), (24<1>) or (24<11>), for heat shielding them from hot test objects. The transducers may be liquid or gas coupled to the object and the emitting surface of each transducer is preferably concave. Specification 1,410,212 is referred to.
