Abstract

1410002 Sulphiding by fused electrolyte process POLITECHNIKA SLASKA IM WINCENTEGO PSTROWSKIEGO 6 June 1974 [20 Oct 1973] 25059/74 Heading C7B The surface of a ferrous metal article is sulphided by immersing it in a molten S - containing salt, e.g. a mixture of 68 to 90% KSCN, 5 to 28% NaSCN and 2 to 5% Na 2 S 2 O 3 or Na 2 S, and electrolyzing using a counter electrode of ferrous metal and intermittently reversing the polarity of the electrodes. Preferably the article has a positive polarity for 2 to 20 times longer than it has a negative polarity. The counter electrode may be a steel crucible containing the molten salt or has a shape similar to that of the article and surrounds it e.g. a cylinder. The current density may be 0.5 to 50A/dm<SP>2</SP>. The sulphided surface resists abrasion and reduces friction in machinery,
