Abstract

1409859 Reciprocating pumps A R CHANCHOLLE and J M F PERISSE 17 Oct 1973 [18 Oct 1972 26 April 1973] 48392/73 Heading F1A [Also in Division A5] Apparatus for sucking up and discharging two fluids without mixing them, e.g. for use in surgical operations to draw off secretions and introduce physiological serum, comprises a suction nozzle 1, Fig.1, connected to a vacuum source via a pipe 3 closable by a valve 8 and a discharge nozzle connected to a pump chamber 21 via a pipe 3a closable by a valve 8a. Valves 8 and 8a are connected to respective slidable sleeves 2, 2a, sleeve 2 being manually movable to the left against spring 9 by a lever 12 and having a flange 15 engageable with a flange 15a on sleeve 2a to open valve 8a against spring 9a after the opening of valve 8. With the valves closed, as shown, vacuum in pipe 3 acts on diaphragm 19 via connection 22 to move the diaphragm upwardly to draw serum from reservoir 18 via check valve 24 into pump chamber 21. On initial movement of lever 12, valve 8 is opened to draw secretions through nozzle 1 and connect the upper side of diaphragm 19 to atmospheric pressure. On further movement of lever 12, valve 8a is opened and the resilience of diaphragm 19 discharges the contents of chamber 21 via nozzle 1a. In the alternative Fig.5 embodiment, a portable member 33 houses flexible tubes 34, 35 connected to suction and discharge nozzles 36, 37, respectively, a pinch valve on tube 34 being actuated by a lever 38 incorporating a lock 44 for holding the valve open, and a pinch valve on tube 35 being operated by a push button 46 incorporating a valve member which opens a port in tube 34 to atmosphere when the pinch valve on tube 35 is opened. Tubes 34 and 35 are connected to chambers 55 and 56, respectively, on opposite sides of a pumping diaphragm 54, the vacuum source being connected via pipe 57 to chamber 55, and chamber 56 being connected to a serum supply 60 via a check valve 59 and pipe 61.
