Abstract
1408891 Carbon fibres CARBORUNDUM CO 12 Sept 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 42216/72 Heading C1A A method for producing a carbon fibre comprises heating an infusible cured phenolformaldehyde novolac fibre in air from ambient temperature up to an intermediate temperature in the range 250‹ to 450‹ C. at a rate of temperature rise from 50‹ C. per hour to 200‹ C. per hour and further heating the fibre in a non- oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. N 2 or an inert gas, from the intermediate temperature to a final temperature in the range 700‹ to 900‹ C. at a rate of temperature rise of from 50‹ to 200‹ C. per hour. The novolac fibre may be swelled by a polar organic liquid. The carbon fibre may subsequently be heated in steam to a temperature in the range 800‹ to 900‹ C. to increase the surface area from 300 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. to as much as 2500 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. Preferred surface area ranges are from 300 to 1000 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., from 300 to 800 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. or from 400 to 1000 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The tensile strength of the carbon fibres produced may be at least 15,000 p.s.i. and the maximum Young's modulus of elasticity may be 3 x 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i. The fibres may be produced in the form of the tows, rovings, yarns, staple and batting, felt, paper and woven or knitted fabrics.
