Abstract

1,212,826. Carbon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 4 April, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 13422/67. Heading CIA. Carbon fibres with a modified surface structure are prepared by heating said fibres in an atmosphere of steam or CO 2 , at a temperatute in the range 750‹ to 950‹ C. The atmosphere is preferably oxygen free, and the oxygen may be removed from C0 2 by passing it over heated Cu pellets, whilst the oxygen-free atmosphere of steam is obtained by heating water which has been de-oxygenated by blowing O 2 -free nitrogen therethrough at the boiling point, and the said heating is preferably carried out for to 3 hours.
