Abstract
1408298 Inner walls for cryogenic tanks BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 25 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 39639/72 Heading F4P The inner wall of a cryogenic tank comprises a plurality of metal plates 4, Fig. 10, each plate being spaced from the adjacent plates, every plate having intersecting corrugations 6, 7 such that the corrugations of the plates are aligned with one another, and each gap between a pair of adjacent plates being bridged by strips 28, 30 which are welded to the two plates and have transverse corrugations which interfit with corresponding corrugations on the plates. Caps 33, Fig. 11, are welded over the gaps left at the corners of the plates, the caps being shaped so as to have portions 35 which fit against the plate corners with intermediate portions 34 for lifting over the ends of the strips 28, 30. In assembling the inner wall, each panel is supported on a base of thermal insulation by a pair of pegs 16, Fig. 3, which extend through a respective pair of openings 5 in the plate. Each peg 16 has a pair of rotatable pins 19, 23, each of which has an eccentric portion 21, 25 which extends through a respective slot 22, 26 in respective horizontally and vertically movable blocks 17, 18. Looking at the horizontally movable block 17, it can be seen that rotation of pin 19 causes the desired horizontal movement. Vertical movement of block 18 is similarly effected. The pins 19, 23 are suitably adjusted in both pegs so that the respective plate is corretly positioned. From Fig. 5 it can be seen that after the required vertical movements have been made with the top of each opening resting on its respective block 18, Fig. 5A, then the left hand block 17 the plate 4 to the left to the required position, Fig. 5B, after which the right-hand block 17 is moved rightwards to engage its opening so that the blocks 17 between them prevent lateral movement of the plate. When all the plates are positioned they are welded to backing strips 10, 11 to maintain the required relative position whilst the bridging strips 28, 30 are attached. The caps 33 are finally welded into position. A cover 36 is welded over each hole 5 and is either cup-shaped to accommodate the projecting peg or is in the form of a flat disc if the pegs are removable. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 14 to 16, not shown), specially suitable for large plates 4 with a high flexibility, a larger number of adjustable supporting pegs 16 may be provided, these being supplemented by a plurality of attachment means for fixing the plate at multiple points on its surface to the insulation after the necessary adjustment is made.
