Abstract

1408068 Insulated wire DES CABLERIES ET TREFILERIES DE COSSONAY SA 17 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 39095/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions Dl and H1] An insulated electrical wire comprises an insulating sheath of plastics material covered with cellulose fibres which are anchored in the sheath. The fibres are of equal length and provide a hydrophobic zone. The coated wire may be made by drawing copper wire 2 off a spool 1, heating it by Joule effect at 4 and passing the heated wire to a dusting device 6 where polyethylene powder 7 is blown through an electrostatically charged mesh 9 on to the hot wire which is earthed at 5. A heating coil 11 melts the plastics powder onto the wire to give a cellular structure (20, Figure 2 not shown) and the molten covered wire passes to a flocking device 12 where cellulose fibres are blown into the molten plastics material and attracted thereto by the electrostatic charge applied from generator 10 to the mesh 15. Air from a liquid air source 18 is blown over the wire to cool it in channel 17 and the wire taken up on spool 3. In an alternative method of manufacture (Figure 4 not shown) the wire is heated initially by a flame (4'), the plastics powder is applied by a vibratory dusting device (6') without the use of an electrostatic charge or blowing, while the fibres are applied by a vibratory device (12') without blowing. This method gives a non-cellular plastics coating. The layer of cellulose fibres swells on absorption of water and thereby prevents water from reaching the inner part of the wire.
