Abstract

<PICT:1023575/C1/1> A method of coating an object with a powder material such as a glass or ceramic consists in mechanically agitating a mass of powder to disperse the powder particles by means of one or more charging electrodes which become immersed in the powder and which are maintained at a potential difference with respect to the object so as electrostatically to charge the dispersed powder particles, and electrostatically attracting the charged particles on to the object to be coated. Apparatus for carrying out the process may comprise a trough-shaped container 1 for the powder, a plurality of rotating electrodes 2 bearing blades or spikes, means for rotating the electrodes, and means for applying a high potential between the electrodes and the substrate 5 to be coated which may be a strip, wire or mesh and may be made of metal, wood, asbestos paper or fabric. The substrate may be heated before or after coating to fuse or sinter the powder.
