Abstract

1407910 Combustion of vent gases BLACK SIVALLS & BRYSON Inc 11 April 1973 [18 July 1972] 17406/73 Heading F4T Apparatus for incinerating a stream of combustible vent gas, e.g. from liquified natural gas tanks in a ship, comprises a burner 12 having an inlet 14 for the vent gas, an inlet 16 for combustion air, a section for mixing the air and vent gas, a combustion chamber, a blower 38 for supplying air to inlet 16, and a quenching chamber 20 connected to the outlet of the combustion, chamber and having an inlet 22 for introducing a stream of quenching medium into chamber 20 for mixture with the products of combustion. Complete combustion of the vent gas takes place in the combustion chamber of the burner 12 and so flame is emitted therefrom. The burner may be of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 3,265,113. Main and pilot vent gas flows pass to inlet 14 via valves 30, 36 respectively. The combustion air flow is controlled by a motor-operated valve 42 having a control 46 responsive to a vent gas flow rate sensor 32 so that a substantially stoichiometric air/gas mixture is produced in burner 12. The quenching medium flow rate is controlled by a valve 52 responsive to a temperature controller 54 so that the combustion products are at 525‹ C. or lower on leaving chamber 20 to pass to atmsophere via a stack 26. The quenching medium may be air, or steam, or air supplied by a blower 48 and mixed with water supplied via a valve 53. Vavles 30 and 53 and blowers 38 and 45 may all be automatically controlled by a central control panel.
