Abstract

1407323 Lift emergency stop gear T HEDSTROM 13 Nov 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 52668/73 Heading B8L A safety device actuable to arrest a lift upon overspeed thereof, comprises a brake disc 10 associated with opposed pre-set spring biased brake pads 15, 19, and mounted on a plate 2 secured to the lift, a spindle 3 of a pinion 4 engaging a rack in the lift shaft, being coupled through a centrifugal device 5 to the brake disc 10 upon overspeed of the spindle 3, whereby the pinion 4 and hence the lift is brought to rest. The device 5 comprises a pair of wing arms pivoted to a main arm and adjustably spring biased radially inwardly, the centrifuging of the wing arms outwardly causing them to engage stops 12 on the freely mounted disc 10 and effect retardation. A secondary emergency stop is provided in case the brakes fail and includes an uneven limbed crank arm pivoted to the plate 2 for engagement by a stop secured to the disc 10. Upon rotation of the disc 10, the stop firstly pivots the crank arm by engagement with the shorter limb, a leaf spring holding the crank arm in this position, and after a further revolution of the disc 10, the larger limb of the crank arm is engaged by the stop and the disc 10 is positively stopped since a stop on the plate 2 prevents the crank arm from rotating far enough to release the stop on the disc 10.
