Abstract
1,034,605. Overspeed brakes for lifts. UNIVERSAL MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Aug. 24, 1964 [July 7, 1964], No. 34609/64. Heading B8L. The lift cage 1 of a builder's hoist is provided with rollers 10, 11 which are spring-urged into engagement with guide rails 5 and which drive a governor mechanism adapted, when the cage reaches a predetermined speed, to rotate brake shoes 34 into gripping engagement with the rails 5, which are gripped between the shoes 34 and fixed shoes 33. The shoes 34 are secured to a rotatable shaft 35 provided with an arm 40, Fig. 8, which is urged in a clockwise direction by a spring 45 and which is normally held in the shoe-retracted position shown by a trigger mechanism 48 comprising arms 49 pivoted at 50 to the brake housing 8 and provided with a cross-member 52 adapted to engage an abutment 42 on the arm 40. The governor mechanism comprises a disc 56 secured to the shaft 12 supporting the rollers 10 and pivotally supporting at 58, 66 levers 57, 65 which are interconnected by a link 67 and which are normally held in the position shown by a spring 60. When the disc reaches a predetermined speed of rotation, the levers 57, 65 swing out and knock the trigger 48 away from the arm 40, thereby allowing the spring 45 to rotate the arm 40 and shaft 35 to cause the shoes 33, 34 to grip the rails 5. The brake is released by rotating the shaft 35 by means of levers 70-72 until a spring 53 causes the trigger 48 to reengage the arm 40.
