Abstract

1506609 Disc brake assemblies O & K ORENSTEIN & KOPPEL AG 13 Nov 1975 [14 Nov 1974 14 Dec 1974] 46885/75 Heading F2E A disc brake assembly for an escalator comprises a brake disc 2 keyed to a driving shaft 1 of the escalator, and a pair of brake pads 7 disposed on opposite sides of the disc 1, each pad 7 being movable during brake actuation and by their braking effort on the disc from a "starting" position close to the axis of rotation of the disc 2 along a predetermined arcuate path disposed non-radially relative to the axis towards a "finishing" position disposed adjacent the outer periphery of the disc 2, to thereby vary the effective radius at which the pads act on the disc 2 and hence increase the braking torque during braking. As shown, each pad 7 has a pair of carrier plates 7a pivotally carried on actuating links 6, each link 6 being pivotally carried at its middle part between support plates 5a, and the links 6 being respectively pivotally connected to output members 11a, 11b of an actuator 11. The actuator 11 is energizable (e.g. by an electric current, or air under pressure) to release the pads 7 against the action of a spring 11c. The plates 5a are supported on an arm 5 which is keyed to a shaft 4 disposed parallel to shaft 1, and a second arm 8 keyed to shaft 4 is connected to an hydraulic damping device 9. A spring 4a coiled round shaft 4 biases the shaft 4 in a clockwise direction. De-energization of actuaIor 11 when the disc 2 is rotating causes application of pads 7 to disc 2, thus subjecting the disc 2 to braking torque and the pads 7 to disturbing forces tending to drag them along the disc surfaces-when the torque on the disc 2 reaches a sufficiently high value the torque exerted by spring 4a on shaft 4 is overcome, the arms 5, 8 rotate and the pads 7 move in the predetermined path. The arrangement ensures progressively increasing deceleration of the escalator. Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) illustrate a preferred form of damping device 9 to ensure a progressively decreasing damping effect.
