Abstract
890,312. Escalators. RHEINSTAHL HAMBURG STAHLBAU EGGERS & FRIEDRICH KEHRHAHN G.m.b.H. Aug. 11, 1959, No. 27407/59. Class 78 (1). In an escalator provided with a service brake and an emergency brake, the emergency brake is adapted to be operated if the escalator is unintentionally run in reverse, but is not operated when it is intentionally run in reverse. For this purpose two discs 1, 1<SP>1</SP> are mounted to rotate together on a shaft driven by the escalator drive, the discs having notches 1a, 1b respectively, the latter being adapted to be engaged by a pawl 2<SP>1</SP> on a lever 2 whilst the former are engaged by a roller 3 carried by the pawl and resting by gravity on the disc 1. Lever 2 is pivoted to a two-armed lever 5, 5<SP>1</SP> pivotally mounted at S and connected by a cable 6 with a control for brake-actuator motor 7. A compression spring 11 normally holds lever 5, 5<SP>1</SP> in the position shown. When the escalator travels forwards discs 1, 1<SP>1</SP> rotate in direction a so that pawl 2<SP>1</SP> cannot engage notches 1b, the speed of rotation of the discs being such that roller 3 engaging disc 1 maintains pawl 2<SP>1</SP> clear of the disc 1<SP>1</SP>. When the escalator unintentionally runs in reverse pawl 2<SP>1</SP> engages one of the notches 1b so that lever 2 is moved and with the assistance of spring 11 now acting over centre turns lever 5, 5<SP>1</SP> to actuate the control for motor 7 to apply the emergency brake. When the escalator is intentionally run in reverse a solenoid 9 is actuated to raise a pin 10 which lifts lever 2 sufficiently for pawl 2<SP>1</SP> to remain clear of the notches 1b.
