Abstract
1407266 Directional microphones WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 19 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 33704/72 Heading H4J A directional microphone having a second order gradient pattern comprises two acoustic chambers 15, 16, a first pair of tubes 11, 13 of equal length, for delivering a sound sample into a respective chamber and a pair of tubes 10, 12 longer than tubes 11, 13, but of equal length, for delivering a sound sample into a respective one of the chambers 15, 16. The tubes sample a sound field at points on a substantially straight line, preferably passing through a diameter of a cylindrical casing 14. A transducer 17, 18 is common to both chambers 15, 16 for combining signals developed in the chambers. The structure may be regarded as comprising two first order gradient microphones of opposite polarities spaced apart from one another, a delay system, and an arrangement for adding the output of one gradient microphone to the delayed output of the other. The transducer is formed of a perforated backplate 17 and an adjacent electrode foil 18. The electrode foil 18 divides the casing 14 into the two chambers 15, 16. One of the chambers is adjustable, using a screw plunger (not shown). Backplate 17 is a brass disc, 4 cm. diameter, having four circular 25À4 Ám ridges on one side and 100 holes. Electret foil is a 25À4 Ám layer of fluoroethylenepropylene metallized on one side and charged using an electron beam. Tubes 10 and 12 are of the same length. Tubes 11 and 13 are of the same length different from that of tubes 10 and 12. All tubes are open at their ends and contain steel wool to damp acoustic resonances. The outer ends of tubes 10, 13 have the same spacing as the outer ends of tubes 11, 12. Each cavity 15, 16 and its associated tubes form a Helmholtz resonator or an acoustic low-pass filter. The resonance frequency is at the lower end of the frequency range of interest. If only two tubes are used, a short tube feeding a layerone cavity and a layer tube feeding the other cavity the microphone characteristic reduces to a cardioid pattern.
