Abstract

998,884. Loud-speakers. ELECTRO-VOICE Inc. June 21, 1962 [June 21, 1961; March 29; 1962], No. 23973/62. Heading H4J. A loud-speaker system, particularly for public address use, comprises a row of cone loudspeakers mounted side-by-side to form a line source, the length of the row being greater than four wavelengths of the highest frequency to be reproduced, and with means for limiting the radiation from the ends of the row. In Fig. 2 a row of 12 loud-speakers 32 forming a concave radiating surface are mounted within a sealed enclosure 10 which acts as a baffle. A layer 50 of absorbent material deadens the sound waves within the enclosure. All the loud-speakers are driven in phase and each set of 4 adjacent loud-speakers may be connected in series. The cone diameter of each loud-speaker may be 4 inches, and the length of the row about 48 inches. In a somewhat similar arrangement, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the loud-speakers have cones of oval shape, at at each end of the row are tweeter loudspeakers connected in parallel. Openings opposite the tweeters are designed to extend the low-frequency response. In Figs. 12, 13 the loud-speakers are arranged in a straight line within an enclosure 220 which acts as a baffle. The six loud-speakers on the left are excited through a low-pass filter 246, 248 having a cut-off frequency of 500 cycles, the three loud-speakers on the right are excited through a low-pass filter 250, 252 cutting off at 2000 cycles, while the remaining loud-speakers receive the whole frequency range. As in Fig. 2, the length of the row may be about 48 inches.
