Abstract
1406934 Nozzles FACTORY MUTUAL RESEARCH CORP 6 Aug 1973 [5 Oct 1972] 37250/73 Heading B2F [Also in Division A5] A nozzle discharge head 10, Fig 1 which discharges a central direct substantially conical-shaped spray pattern of extinguishant and a peripheral deflected spray at an angle thereto, is constructed with body 12 having outlet 16 and deflector 50 mounted therebelow by supports 52, the design of deflector 50 being such that a portion only of the extinguishant discharged through 16 is defiected from the main direction of flow. Body 12 has threaded inlet 14 and helical vane 18 mounted to impart a swirling motion to the extinguishant to form a solid conical discharge pattern. Hollow central hub 20 of vane 18 supports rod 22 having head 24 at its remote end. Ring seals 26 between head 24 and body 12 normally prevent extinguishant discharge at 16. Rod 22 is retained in the Fig 1 position by assembly 30 including rod 32 which slidably extends through 'boss 34 projecting from the side of body 12, the inner end of 32 engaging in slot 36 in rod 22. The outer end of 32 engages thermal fuse element 44 which is positioned within ring 42 forming the end of stub shaft 40. Boss 34 and shaft 40 are threaded into opposite ends of sleeve 38, the inner surface of which is engaged by slidable piston head 46 mounted on rod 32. Compression spring 48 between boss 34 and head 46 biases rod 32 in the direction away from body 12. Thus when elements 44 fuses, rod 22 is released from rod 32 and escapes from outlet 16 along with head 24. Deflector plate 50 is supported below 16 by struts 52 attached by means of bolts 54 to body 12 and intercepts, for example, 8-12% of the discharged extinguishant. Each strut 52 may have three openings for each bolt 54 so that the distance between deflector 50 and body 12 can be varied as required. In the Fig 5 embodiment the deflector is supported by springs instead of struts, and in Fig 6 the deflector has a curved outer edge to direct extinguishant upwardly.
