1406766 Cyanine dyes FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 31 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 26127/73 Heading C4P [Also in Division C2] Dimeric cyanine dyes for sensitizing electrophotographic photoconductors are of formula (in which R<SP>1</SP> is H, 1-5 C alkyl, or alkyl or acyl substituted by halogen, OH or CN; R<SP>2</SP> is -(CH 2 ) n - or p-xylylene; n is 2-6; R<SP>3</SP> is H, halogen, nitro, 1-5 C alkyl, -OR<SP>5</SP> or -CO 2 R<SP>5</SP>; R<SP>5</SP> is 1-5 C alkyl; X is anion). The dyes are prepared by reacting a bis-(2-methylene indoline) or a bis-(2-methylindolium salt) with 2- formyl-carbazole.
