Abstract
1406599 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines J ALLAN 14 Aug 1972 [14 May 1971 27 July 1971] 2960/71 and 35320/71 Heading F1F A machine that can be used as a blower has flexible vanes 28 inter-connecting a hollow rotary piston 21 and a hollow rotary cylinder 5, which has working-fluid ports 6 co-operating with inlet and outlet passages 25, 26 in a fixed casing, or "shroud", 23. The eccentricity of the piston may be adjustable with the aid of a lever 22, shaft 15 and arm 17 at each end. Rotation of the shroud is prevented by tubes 24. Bearings 12, 13, 18 support the cylinder and piston. The vanes are secured by plates 29 and clamps 30, and may have longitudinal ribs, or "teeth", to facilitate bending. The cylinder may be made of a plastics material reinforced with glass fibres 8 and short fibres 9 therebetween. Two such machines may be coupled together by belts, Figs. 11 to 13 (not shown), the shroud being dispensed with. In another embodiment, Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), air is inducted through one end of the cylinder and ejected through one end of the piston. In a further embodiment, Figs. 16 to 18 (not shown), air is inducted through lateral ports (66) in the cylinder and ejected through one end of the piston, said ports being covered with perforated plates (67) to support the vanes. Yet another embodiment, Figs. 19 to 23 (not shown), is usable as an expander and comprises lateral inlet and outlet ports (86, 87) in the piston and sliding blades, or fixed fins, on the piston to effect radial sealing between the vanes in the region where the piston is closest to the cylinder, the piston and cylinder being synchronized by intermeshing pegs (93). The vanes may be made of silicon rubber reinforced with carbon fibres and may have an axial-sealing bead at each end furnished with PTFE inserts (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), to reduce friction.
