Abstract

1,215,667. Rotary-piston machines. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. June 19, 1969 [July 22, 1968], No.31108/69. Heading F1F. A rotary sliding vane machine, described as an air motor, comprises a casing body 3, Figs. 1, 2, having a cylindrical bore 6 extending between end plates 4, 5 and a rotor 7 formed with an output shaft 8 and mounted on an eccentric portion 20 of a stationary shaft 11 for rotation within a cylinder 16 which is a loose fit in the casing body 3. The rotor 7 which is made in two parts 14, 15 for ease in assembly includes a plurality of radial axiallyextending slots therethrough fitted with sliding vanes 18 whose outer ends sealingly engage the inner surface of the cylinder 16 and inner ends are engaged by a bearing 19 supported on the eccentric shaft portion 20. The cylinder 16 at all times rotates, sometimes faster than and sometimes slower than the rotor, depending on speed and frictional forces, to reduce friction and hence wear between the vane tips and the cylinder 16. The vanes are formed with arcuate edges to permit slight movement relative to the cylinder 16 without allowing the latter to wobble. Sealing strips 31 lightly loaded by springs are fitted between the casing body 3 and the cylinder to seal the inlet 23 of the motor from its outlet 24.
