Abstract

Apparatus for drying a web A comprises an outer, stationary cylindrical or part-cylindrical surface having outlet and intake apertures 10, 11 alternating in the direction of web travel for the passage of air which both spaces and supports the web from the surface. The air flow is generated by the impellers 2 of spaced centrifugal blowers mounted on a common shaft 1 within the apparatus so as to have suction chambers 3, 3<SP>1</SP> on each side of each blower communicating with the intake apertures 11 through flow channels 13 and the pressure chamber 4 of each blower is connected to the outlet apertures 10 through flow channels 12. The channels 12 and 13 are formed by partitions and vanes (not shown), guide the air flow. Air heating tubes 5 are positioned between in the chambers and have fins 6 of arcuate form partially encircling the impellers and perpendicular to the shaft 1. For drawing in the web, the apparatus may be entirety stationary or it may be rotary in its entirety or only its shell.
