Abstract

1406353 Shearing STEEL CONSTRUCTION & ENG CO (NOTTS) Ltd 14 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 4045/73 Heading B3W A hydraulically-operated guillotine is actuated by a pair of cylinders 20A, (20B), one at each end of a movable blade 11 and connected between anchorages 21 on respective side frames 1A (1B) and arms 19A, (19B). The arms, rigidly mounted one at each end of a rotatable shaft 17, are connected by links 38, 39 to bosses 15A, (15B) on respective ends of a beam 12 carrying the blade 11, which project through slots 16A (16B) in the frames 1A, (1B). The axis of the shaft 17 is parallel to the central plane of the slots. The end 12A of the blade beam leads the end (12B) during a working stroke. At the beginning of a working stroke in which fluid is supplied to both the rams, ram (20B) acts on the trailing end (12B) through arm (19B) and links 38, 39 and ram 20A acts on the leading end 12A through the shaft 17, as torque, the arm 19A and links 38, 39. During the final cutting action the ram 20A acts on the leading end 12A through arm 19A and links 38, 39 and ram (20B) acts through the shaft 17, arm (19B) and links 38, 39. At the middle of the cutting stroke little or no effect is transmitted via the shaft. A shut-off valve may be provided in the supply line to the trailing end ram so that for faster operation when material of small cross sectional area or less resistance to shearing than the maximum capacity of the guillotine, fluid is supplied only to the leading end ram. A hold down 30 urged downwardly by springs (not shown) in housings 31 is raised against the springs in the raised position of the blade 11 by interengaging projections 32, 33 on the beam 12 and clamp 30 respectively. The side frames 1A, (1B) are connected to plates 4-8 to form a box beam and a plate 23 directs cut-off material to the back of the guillotine and protects a motor and pump unit 24. The length of the cutting stroke can be varied. Parallel work supports 36 are provided, the left hand one having an upstanding straight edge 37 square with the fixed blade 10.
