Abstract

1405149 Roof structure METAL TRIM Ltd 16 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 48986/72 Headings E1K and E1W Purlins, comprising a series of girders, e.g. of Z-section metal, overlapped at their joined ends, are arranged such that the bolted overlap between adjacent girders is disposed centrally over a supporting rafter and such that the length of the overlap is one fifth of the spacing L between rafters. The overlap may alternatively lie within the range L to L/8 and preferably between L/4 and L/8. Since the bending moment at the rafters is twice the bending moment centrally between rafters, the use of an overlap of one fifth enables the minimum size of purlin to be used, as it is only subject to half the bending moment of a single continuous purlin.
