Abstract

1404754 Electron capture detector system J E LOVELOCK 25 Sept 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 37025/71 Heading G1N In an electron capture gas detecting system, two detectors A, B are arranged so that gas flows from A into B, detector A being supplied with a potential which varies between minimum and maximum values and the output of detector B being applied to detecting means. As shown, the potential applied to detector A cyclically varies between zero and 100 volts. When the high voltage is applied and the incoming gas contains a strong electron absorber no ionization occurs in detector A and detector B responds as if A was absent. At zero potential, electrons are removed from the gas and detector B provides an increased signal. The signal from B is then moduated in the cycle of the applied potential whenever a strong electron absorber is present, a synchronous detecting means being provided.
