Abstract
1404019 Control of A.C. motors; frequency changing BORG-WARNER CORP 4 Aug 1972 [25 Aug 1971] 36513/72 Headings H2J and H2F The speed of an A.C. motor is controlled by selectively varying the periods for which power is supplied in each polarity by counting supply half-cycles. The voltage is additionally controlled by gating an electronic switch at a variable point in each half-cycle. As shown, a motor 11 is connected to a supply 12 by way of a bi-directional switch, such as a pair of thyristors SCR1, SCR2, a triac, or transistors. The supply voltage is also passed by a bridge rectifier 14 and Zener diode 78 to a frequency control circuit 20 including a timing circuit 92, 42 and unijunction transistor UJT1 which supplies pulses to a multivibrator 19 including thyristors SCR3, SCR4 and thus determines the output frequency by biasing diodes 65, 66 in a gating circuit 22 connected to the switch SOR1, SCR2. A further thyristor SCR5 in the circuit 20 synchronizes the charging of capacitor 42 with the supply signal. A voltage control circuit 21 including a capacitor 75 and unijunction transistor UJT2 supplies pulses to gating circuit 22 to control the firing angle within the half cycles of the supply determined by the multivibrator 19. A further circuit, including a thyristor (S1) and silicon unidirectional switch (S2), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be provided to ensure starting of the supply circuit in the desired switching mode.
