Abstract

When thyristor and triac speed controllers for motors are switched on with a low setting the current drawn may be below the hold current of the semiconductor. To avoid adjustment to start the load a by-pass circuit is used. The thyristor/triac may have an unijunction transistor and a capacitor, or a diac and capacitor firing components with a control potentiometer. The by-pass is a capacitor in series with a diode, in parallel with another capacitor and diode in the opposite direction connected across the thyristor/triac. Both of the capacitors have parallel discharge resistors. When the mains is connected a heavy full-wave current is drawn through the load until the capacitors are charged.
