Abstract

1410351 Controlling the power supplied to loads; control of A.C. motors D J MARTIN 11 Jan 1973 1328/72 Headings H2H and H2J A circuit for controlling the power supplied to a load 11 comprises a triac 13, a diac 14 for supplying a triggering voltage to the triac, and a circuit including a potentiometer 17, a capacitor 19 and a neon tube 18 for supplying an adjustable voltage to the diao. The square waveform of the voltage across the neon tube 18 enables a linear charging of the capacitor 19 until the diac 14 breaks down whereupon the triac 13 is triggered and power is supplied to the load 11 such as a lamp or a motor. The lamp may be dimmed or the motor speed controlled by adjusting the potentiometer 17 to vary the point in the cycle of the A.C. supplied to terminals 10 at which the triac is triggered. The diac may be replaced by a discharge tube.
