Abstract

The circuit operates in conjunction with a transistor circuit supplying preset but variable current to the motor in order to maintain a constant torque. At low speeds, or if the motor stall, the back e.m.f. developed by the motor is small and thus the transistor in the controller has to absorb the large voltage difference between motor and supply. The protection circuit operating level is dependant upon the applied voltage and back e.m.f. in such a manner that for increasing transistor voltage is reponds at a lower current to limit the power loss in the control transistor. Typically the protection shunts some of the motor current.
