Abstract

140,376. Carroll, J. D. March 10, 1919, [Convention date]. Fixed-abutment type; packing drums, vanes, etc.; valve-gear; back pressure, reducing.-In a rotary engine of the sliding-rocking vane type, the vanes 59 rotate round a fixed eccentric 44, and slide through rocking members 66 in the drum 47. The drum is concentric and fast with the driving-shaft 1 and carries radial flanges 48 which overlap and form steam-tight joints with the ends of the cylinders 5, 6, forming the rotating side walls of these cylinders. The eccentricity of the two end cylinders 5 is diametrically opposite to that of the intermediate cylinder 6. An exhaust conduit 16, leading to the exhaust chamber 18 surrounds each cylinder. Steam is admitted through the rock valve 28 and the port 25 into the working chambers, and through the valves 92 into the valve cages 39, thus keeping the valves 36 closed. The valves 92<1> are closed, so that after each vane passes the exhaust port 43, any compression of trapped steam due to contraction in volume of working chamber is relieved through the poppet valves 36<1>. When the engine is reversed, the opposite cycle of operations takes place, the valve 92<1> being open. Spring packing-devices are fitted to the vanes, to the cylinder walls, and to the rockers 66.
