Abstract
1403575 Optical systems RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 12 July 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 37073/72 Heading G2J A viewing system e.g. in a microscope or theodolite, having optical components defining a viewing path 3 along which light passes to an eye-piece 2, includes a liquid crystal cell 4, means 9, 10 additional to the components for directing light through the cell 4 means 8 for applying an activating field to the cell, or to selected parts of the cell, and means 11, 12 for forming an image of the cell 4 in the viewing path 3, e.g. in the image plane 14 of the eye-piece 2, whereby a predetermined display is superimposed on the viewing path on activating the cell. The display may be a digital presentation, a graticule, a scale or cross-wires, and the cell may be of the dynamic scatter type or the high contrast type. If the latter, the cell may have linear surface textures or features on the cell walls arranged at right angles to each other, the cell being located between two polarizing filters (15), Fig. 2 (not shown), the polarizing directions of which are parallel to the linear textures &c. in adjacent walls. Activation of the cell, or selected parts therof, destroys the optical activity of those parts of the cell, which therefore passes no light through those parts.
