Abstract

SPERRY RAND CORP 30 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 35923/71 Heading G2J [Also in Division H4j An optical device comprises first, 11, and second, 12, elements each including an isotropic lens 13, 17 and a birefringent lens 14, 16 in abutting relation along respective curved surfaces of equal radii of curvature, the elements being oriented in tandem relationship such that the optic axis of the birefringent lens of the first element 14 is normal to the optic axis of the birefringent lens of the second element 16, with the axis of symmetry of the first element 19 being parallel to and displaced from the axis of symmetry of the second element 16. The device deflects light of one polarization direction one way, and light of the other polarization the other. The surfaces 21, 23 and 22 are preferably planar, and the radii of the curved surfaces R a and R b preferably equal, with the birefringent lenses being made of the same material. If one element is driven with respect to the other, altering d, then the light beam may be scanned.
