Abstract
1,252,276. Focal length modulator. THOMSON-CSF. 12 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 53704/68. Heading H4F. [Also in Division G2] Apparatus for varying the point of focus of a linearly polarized monochromatic light beam comprises a switchable electro-optic (KDP) half-wave plate and a birefringent lens (calcium carbonate crystal) the operative refractive index of which depending on the plane of polarization of the light output of the electro-optic half-wave plate. A plurality n of switchable electro-optic half-wave plate and birefringent lens assemblies may be arranged in series, and by selectively energizing the half-wave plates the light beam may be focused to 2<SP>n</SP> different points. If the voltages applied to the half-wave plates are not correct the light beam is elliptically polarized and all the light energy is not focused at the selected focal point. To avoid this drawback an additional switchable electro-optic half-wave plate followed by an analyser are disposed after the assemblies and for each optical power value selected (focal point) the number of half-wave plates excited is arranged to be either always even or always odd. The optical power valves may be positive, negative or neutral by utilizing a combination of convergent and divergent birefringent lenses. In a further embodiment a switchable electro-optic quarter-wave plate having a reflective surface which may constitute one of the electrodes is positioned adjacent a birefringent lens, the arrangement having two focal points. By varying the voltages applied to the electro-optic plates the arrangement may be used with monochromatic light of various wavelengths.
