Abstract

1402760 Processes for producing images ENERGY CONVERSION DEVICES Inc 15 July 1972 [15 July 1971] 30569/72 Heading G2C Images are produced by imagewise exposing to high intensity radiant energy a material comprising a support coated with a continuous, solid layer of a substance which causes the substance to melt and soften and, because of its low meltability for the support, form spaced apart globules of the substance about which light can pass. A material capable of reducing the meltability of the support may be provided in an intermediate layer. Specified substances are Te, Se, Pb, Sb 2 S 3 ,Bi and compositions containing Te or Se with at least 60 per cent Te or at least 70 per cent Se. The support is preferably polymeric though glass supports can be used if higher levels exposure are used. Specified radiant energy sources are lasers, flashguns and electron beams. If a layer of gum arabic, optionally with silver nitrate, is applied to the layer, a lower kind of exposure is required. The gum arabic layer may be applied between the support and the sensitive layer but this is less effective. The imagewise exposure may be performed by using a separate original, by typing the original on to the material or by applying a photosensitive layer, such as a vesicular material or an As 2 S 3 /Ag material, to the sensitive layer or the back of the support and forming an image in the photo-sensitive layer using a lower level of exposure than that which effects the globule-forming layer. Lithographic plates may be produced by this process.
