Abstract
1402466 Automatic control of temperature SIEMENS AG 26 Sept 1972 [27 Sept 1971] 44502/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H1] In a method of operating a fuel cell, wherein electrolyte flows through the cell at a variable rate, an increase in the flow-rate is brought about as a consequence of an increase in the temperature of the electrolyte leaving the cell, and conversely a decrease in flow-rate is brought about by a decrease in electrolyte temperature. The arrangement is such that if the temperature of the electrolyte is below a predetermined minimum e.g. during the warm-up period then the electrolyte flow is substantially zero and this flow-rate gradually increases, Fig. 2 (not shown), as the electrolyte temperature increases. A thermistor, thermocouple or resistance thermometer 7 senses the highest electrolyte temperature, i.e. just after leaving the battery 2, and this is fed to a regulating unit 8 controlling the motor 6 operating the electrolyte pump 5. The system is stabilized at the optimum cell operating temperature. In an alternative arrangement the regulating unit 8 controls a throttle valve and the pump 5 is of the constant-speed type. The arrangement considerably reduces the warm-up time of the battery before it is ready for full operation.
