Abstract

1401880 Self-sealing films EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 Nov 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 57680/72 Heading C3P Transparent self-sealing films are made from compositions comprising (1) 90 to 99À5 weight per cent of a copolymer of ethylene and a vinyl or hydrocarbyl substituted vinyl ester of a C 1-30 monocarboxylic acid containing at least 89 weight per cent of ethylene, and (2) 0À05 to 10 weight per cent of a hydrocarbon resin which is an amorphous hydrocarbon polymer of molecular weight not more than 3000, 0À05 to 5 weight per cent of a liquid polyisobutylene or liquid polybutylene, or a mixture of such resin and liquid polymer in a combined total of not more than 10 weight per cent. The resin may be a polyterpene resin or a polymer, preferably hydrogenated, of cracked petroleum distillate fractions. Preferred fractions comprise unsaturated ring compounds, e.g. cyclodienes, cycloalkenes and indenes. The compositions may be formed into films by blow extrusion or chill roll casting. Examples describe the preparation of films from compositions comprising ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers and (1 and 2) petroleum resins, (3) liquid polyisobutylene and (4) petroleum resin and liquid polyisobutylene.
