Abstract

1400821 Sheet material based on bitumen PERMANITE Ltd 19 April 1972 18225/72 Addition to 1271233 Headings C3N C3G and C3P A flexible waterproof sheet comprises a mixture of bitumen having a softening point of 70‹ C. or above, synthetic polymer compatible therewith and non-fibrous filling together with synthetic thermoplastic fibrous reinforcement filling, the said synthetic polymer constituting at most 50% by weight of the mixture and (a) comprising at least one of butyl rubberpolyethylene graft copolymer, polyethylene, a copolymer of ethylene with a comonomer other than vinyl acetate, and a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene with one or more of polyvinyl chloride, vinylidene halide copolymer, atactic polypropylene, and styrenebutadiene block copolymer, (b) consisting of chlorosulphonated polyethylene or ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer, or (c) comprising a mixture which contains ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and a polymer other than chlorosulphonated polyethylene. The fibrous synthetic thermoplastic filler may be polyester, nylon, polyacrylic, cellulose acetate, polypropylene, rayon, or polyvinyl chloride fibre. Mineral, glass, animal or vegetable fibres may be included. Fire resistance may be improved by adding antimony sulphide or antimony oxide and chlorinated paraffins. The non-fibrous filler may be carbon black, silica, polyester resin or calcium carbonate. The specific examples disclose compositions comprising bitumen, chlorinated paraffin, calcium carbonate, carbon black, polyester fibre and as synthetic polymer component:- chlorosulphonated polyethylene (1, 2); a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene and atactic polypropylene wax (3); ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (4); a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride (5); a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene and a vinylidene chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer (6); a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene and a butyl rubber-polyethylene graft copolymer (7); a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene, a styrene-butadiene-styrene copolymer and atactic polypropylene (8); a mixture of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and chlorinated polyethylene (9); high-density polyethylene (10); low-density polyethylene (11); an ethylene-propylene copolymer (12); an ethylene-propylene-1,3-butadiene terpolymer (13); and a mixture of chlorosulphonated polyethylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and atactic polypropylene.
