Abstract

1400743 Portable containers; boxes W A WOOTTEN 21 June 1972 [23 June 1971] 29020/72 Headings B8D and B8P [Also in Division B5] A paperboard container has a separable seam formed between two panel portions 1, 4, the portion 1 having a plurality of spaced perforations 2 therein, each perforation 2 being completely bounded by the material of the portion 1, the periphery of each perforation 2 including two semicircular portions, the portion 4 being arranged to overlap the portion 1 and having a plurality of spaced perforations 3 therein, each perforation 3 having a portion 5 extending to the boundary edge of the portion 4 to form spaced separated tabs 6 which extend through the perforations 2, Fig. 2. The portion 5 may take the form of a line cut, Fig. 1, or a larger cut 8, Fig. 3. The seam may be used to join two panels at right angles, Fig. 4 (not shown), or three panels at right angles to form a corner joint, Fig. 5 (not shown). An edge of a panel may be joined to an intermediate section of a panel, Fig. 6 (not shown), or the edges of two panels may be joined to an intermediate section, Fig. 7 (not shown). A carton top may be secured to a carton body by providing the tabs on the top, Fig. 8 (not shown), or on the body, Figs. 9 and 9a (both not shown). A cylindrical tub may have a longitudinal seam and top and bottom closures, joined thereto, Figs. 10-12 (all not shown). Laminated sheets may have strengthening ribs secured thereto by the seam of the present invention, Figs. 13 and 14 (both not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 17, the perforations 52 are elongate and the tabs 53 are shaped as shown. The seam may be assembled by hand using a pin 38, Fig. 15, to push the tabs 6 through the slots 2. Alternatively, the panels are passed between rolls (40), (41), Fig. 16 (not shown), so that pins (44) on the roll (40) press the tabs (6) through the perforations (2). A groove (45) in the roll (41) provides clearance for the pins (44).
