(Cl. 220-113) ABSTRACT OF THE DISQLOS A collapsible cellular bottle carrier formed from a cut and scored blank of flexible sheet material which comprises, when set up, opposed pairs of hingedly connected vertical side and end walls, a collapsible bottom wall extending between the side walls, a longitudinal partition and handle structure extending in a vertical plane between the end walls and parallel to the side walls, and longitudinally spaced cross partition straps which are integrally hinged on vertical fold lines to upper portions of side walls and to the longitudinal partition and handle structure and which divide the carrier into three equal cells on each side of said longitudinal partition and handle structure.
This invention relates to article carriers and is particularly concerned with improvements in a carrier of the type which is formed from sheet material cut and folded so as to provide a tray-like cellular compartment for the articles and a strong and sturdy center partition and associated handle structure.
The present carrier, which is of the general type described in my Patent No. 3,140,797, dated July 14, 1964, is characterized by opposed pairs of vertical, flexible side and end walls, by a longitudinal partition and handle structure extending in a vertical plane between the end walls and parallel to the side walls, and by flexible cross partition straps which are disposed in longitudinally spaced, vertical planes and are integrally hinged on vertical fold lines to the respective side walls and to the longitudinal partition and handle structure, with the outermost portions extending diagonally in the direction of the top margins of the side walls. The carrier is formed from a blank which can be cut from fiberboard or paperboard stock sheets previously imprinted on one side thereof only with little Waste in cutting. The blank is cut, creased and folded with certain partition forming portions being adhesively secured so as to provide a collapsed bottom panel having side wall panels foldably connected thereto with inturncd cross partition forming straps hinged at one end to the side wall panels and at the other end to a multi-ply longitudinal partition and handle structure which is connected at its opposite ends to paired end wall panels foldably connected to the ends of the side Wall panels and joined in hinged relation by integral inturned center partition securing flaps, with a multiple ply, longitudinal partition and handle structure formed by a pair of handle sections which are foldably connected at one end there-of to end extensions of adjacent center partition securing flaps and a handle facing flap foldably connected to the top edge of one of the handle sections and adhesively secured to the other handle section.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a cellular carrier of the type described which is formed so as to provide for separation of the articles by at least one thickness of material throughout substantially the full depths of the cells in which the articles are sup ported, which is formed from a blank of smaller dimensions than heretofore possible for a carrier which provides full depth separation of the articles and which is of strong and rugged construction so as to adequately support the articles carried therein and to withstand the abuse normally encountered during repeated use in the marketing of articles such as bottled beverages and the like.
It is a more specific object of the invention to provide a cellular article carrier of the type described in which the cell defining cross partition straps have associated panels depending therefrom substantially the full depth of the cell for separation of the articles in the cells and in which two of the partition panels are integrally hinged to the inclined top edges of the cross straps and folded downwardly so as to depend therefrom in partition forming position.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a bottle carrier of the type described having cross partition form ing inclined straps between the cells on each side of the longitudinal partition to which the straps are hinged with the bottles in the cells at one end thereof separated by panels which are integral with the inclined strap dividers and which are folded down from the top edge thereof and secured to the dividers so as to provide for separation of the bottles from shoulder to bottom thereof.
These and other objects and advantages of the inven tion will be apparent from a consideration of the carrier which is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings wherein:

The carrier of FIGURE 1 is fabricated from a gener ally rectangular paperboard blank 10 which is cut and creased or scored as shown in FIGURE 5. The blank 10 is divided in one direction thereof into a bottom forming center section 11 and two Wall and partition forming end sections 12 and 13 by parallel transverse score lines 14 and 14 which are equally spaced from the medial transverse score line 15, the latter dividing the bottom forming section 11 into equal panels 16 and 16'. Since the blank sections 12 and 13 are divided, to a large extent, into wall and partition forming elements by identical cutting and creasing or scoring lines, only one of these sections will be fully described and corresponding parts of the same relationship on the opposite side of the medial score line 15 will be indicated by the same numerals primed.
The end section 12 of the blank is divided by longitudinally extending, transversely spaced score lines and transversely extending cutting lines into side wall panel 17, end wall panels 18 and 19 at opposite sides thereof which are separated therefrom by parallel score lines 20 and 21 extending longitudinally of the blank, and longitudinal partition forming panels 22 and 23 adjoining the end Wall panels 18 and 19 and separated therefrom by the score lines 24 and 25, also extending longitudinally of the blank. The end wall panels 18 and 19 have a dimension in the direction transversely of the blank which corresponds to half the width of the carrier or to the dimension in the longitudinal direction of the blank of one of the bottom wall panels 16, 16'. The longitudinal partition panel 22 adjoining the end wall panel 18 has a dimension transversely of the blank which is approximately half of the corresponding dimension of the end wall panel 18. The longitudinal partition panel 23 which adjoins the end wall panel 19 extends to a score line 26 which is parallel with the score line 25 and spaced therefrom a distance equal to the corresponding dimension of the end wall panel 19. The score line 26 separates from the end wall panel 19 a cross partition panel 27 which is taken from the margin of the blank. The panel 27 has a dimension transversely of the blank which is slightly greater than half the corresponding dimension of the end wall panel 19 and forms a flap thereon adapted to be hinged about the score line 26.
A longitudinal partition and handle forming panel 3%) is separated from the side wall panel 17 and adjoining end wall panel 19 by parallel spaced cutting lines 31 and 32. The cutting lines 31 and 32 have parallel inner portions 33 and 34 inclined outwardly in the direction of the end edge 35 of the blank and terminating at their inner ends at points which are in alignment transversely of the blank and which coincide with the ends of the short cutting lines 36 and 37, the latter being parallel with the transverse score line 14 and extending from the inner ends of spaced hinge forming score lines 38 and 39 toward the score line 21. The score lines 38 and 39 are parallel with each other and divide the side wall panel 17 in a transverse direction of the blank into three equal portions. The cutting lines 31 and 32 have transversely aligned and transversely extending portions 40 and 41, the cutting line 40 terminating at the score line 39 and the cutting line 41 extending across the score line 21 into the end wall panel 19 to the inner end of a diagonal cutting line 42 which extends to the score line 25. The cutting line 31 has extended outer portions 43, 44 which parallel the cutting lines 34 and 41 and which terminate at the score line 21. These lines are spaced apart so as to form with the score line 39 and the end portion of score line 21 the cross partition strap 45. A cutting line 46 extends from the outer edge of the outer extension 47 of the hinge forming score line 39 to the outer end of the diagonal score line 48 which cutting line 46 is parallel with and aligned with the transverse cutting line 44. The score line 48 terminates at its inner end at the hinge forming score line 38. The cutting lines 33, 36, 4t and together with the score lines 38, 47 and 48 define a cross partition strap 49 of the same character as the cross partition strap 45. The strap members 45 and 49 are adapted to hinge at one end about the score lines 21 and 47 and at the other end about the score lines 38 and 39 when the handle panel 30 is moved out of the lane of the side wall panel 17. The handle panel 30 is freed from the end wall panel 19 by the cutting lines 41 and 42 leaving panel 3%: connected in hinged relation to the outer end of the longitudinal partition panel 23 by hinge forming extension 59 of the score line 25. The one corner of the blank section 12 is cut away on the line 51 and a slot 52 is cut at the outer end of the score line to separate the panel 23 from the panel 33 leaving a small rectangular handle reinforcing tab 53 at the outer edge of the panel 23 which is separated therefrom by a hinge forming score line 54. At the other corner of the blank section 12 a hinge forming score line 55 and the aligned outer slot 56 divide from the handle section two handle reinforcing panels 57 and 58. The two reinforcing panels are divided by a hinge forming score line 59 which is aligned transversely of the blank with a hinge forming score line 60 dividing the main portion of the handle panel 30 into two outer or cover forming handle panels 61 and 62. The innermost reinforcing panel 57 is freed from the end wall panel 18 and longitudinal partition panel 22 by the cutting lines 63 and 64 and from the side wall panel 17 by the cutting line 65, which cutting line 65 is parallel with the score line 14 and forms the top edge of the side wall panel 17. A cutting line 66 which is parallel with and spaced outwardly of the cutting line 65 extends from the cutting line 63 to the intersection of score line 48 and cutting line 46 and defines with the cutting lines 63, 65 and the hinge forming score line 48 a cross partition panel 67 which has a dimension normal to the cutting lines 65 and 66 slightly greater than one-half the tran verse dimension of the adjacent end wall panel 18, and which is adapted to hinge about the score line 48. The handle cover panels 61 and 62 are provided with hand holes 68 and 63 and the handle reinforcing panels 57 and 53 are provided with hand holes 70 and 71 which align with the hand holes 68 and 69 when the panels 57 and 58 are folded inwardly about the hinge forming score line 55 into engagement with the inside faces of the handle cover panels 61 and 62, the double ply panels then being adapted to fold on the score lines 59 and 60 to form the handle with the innermost portions of these panels which adjoin the cross partition straps constituting part of the longitudinal partition. The longitudinal panel 22 is notched at its inner end so that the end thereof forms a hook 72 for engaging the co-operating slot 73 in the bottom wall panel 16, 16' when the carrier is set up, as shown in FIGURE 2.
At the other end of the blank 10, section 13 is cut and scored in a similar manner, with the handle cover panels 61, 62 and the handle reinforcing panels 57, 58 being omitted except for the longitudinal partition forming portion indicated at 75. Also, the longitudinal partition forming panel 23' which is opposite the panel 23 is cut and scored in a different manner to provide therein a rectangular cross partition panel 76 defined by the U- shaped cutting line 77 and the hinge forming score line 78, the latter extending parallel with the score line 25' and being spaced therefrom a distance corresponding to the dimension of the adjoining end wall panel 19 in the direction transversely of the blank. The score line 78 is aligned with the score line 26 in the longitudinal direction of the blank and the panel 76 has approximately the same dimensions as the panel 27. The panels 23 and 23 have approximately the same dimensions in the direction transversely of the blank. A notch 79 is provided in the panel 23' adjacent the cutting line 77 to facilitate hinging the panel 76 during the set-up of the carton on automatic machinery. The panels in the section 13 of the blank are otherwise identical with corresponding panels in the section 12 of the blank and are indicated by the same numerals primed.
The blank 10, when out and scored or creased, is glued and folded to provide the carrier which is illustrated in FlGURE 1. In setting up the carrier from the blank, glue is applied as shown in FIGURE 5 to the longitudinal partition and handle panel 30 and the cross partition straps 45 and 49 in the blank section 12 and the panels 45', 49' and 75 in the blank section 13. The cross partition panels 67, 67 and 76 are first folded about the hinge lines 48, 48 and 78 into engagement with the side wall panels 17, 17' and the longitudinal partition panel 13 as shown in FIGURE 6. The end wall and longitudinal partition panels 22, 18; 23, 27 and 22, 18'; 23, 27' are folded about the score lines 20, 25 and 20', 25" into engagement with the side wall and end wall panels as shown in FIGURE 7 after which the handle reinforcing panels 57 and 58 are folded about the hinge line 55. Glue is applied to the exposed faces of panels 57, 53, 22 and 23, as shown in FIGURE 7, after which the blank is folded about the medial score line 15 and the handle panels are folded about the score lines 59, 60 to complete the blank assembly and provide the collapsed carrier shown in FIGURE 8 which, when opened up, has the form shown in FIGURE 1. A somewhat different sequence may be followed in folding and gluing the panels, namely, the handle reinforcing panels 57 and 58 may be folded about the score line 55 as a first folding step with the panels 22, 18 and 23, 27 of section 12 and panels 22', 18 and 23, 27 of section 13 being thereafter folded about the score lines 24, 25 and 24, 25', and with the necessary change in the application of glue.
It will be noted that in the completed carrier (FIG- URE 1) two of the full depth protection panels 27 and 76 which depend from the cross partition straps 45 and 45' are derived from longitudinal partition forming portions of the blank along one side thereof. The other pair of full depth protection panels 67 and 67 are derived from the material normally employed for reinforcing the handle in this type of carrier. These panels are integral with the inclined strap dividers 49, 49' and are folded at approximately 45 and glued down to the inclined straps to provide shoulder to bottom partitions between the bottles. This arrangement permits the over-all dimensions of the blank to be held small enough so as to permit running double feed on a conventional master gluer, resulting in doubling of the production normally obtained with this type of blank modified in any other known manner to provide full depth cross partitions between the cells.
The carrier, as illustrated, is fabricated from a blank which is cut and scored so as to provide a foldable two panel bottom 16, 16' which is integrally hinged to the side walls 17 and 17' on the score lines 14 and 14'.
It will be understood that the carrier may be formed by cutting and scoring the blank so as to derive the handle and handle reinforcing panels from the center portion of the blank in an area between the two side walls. The bottom wall panels would then be taken from one end of the blank and secured by a glue flap taken from the other end thereof after the manner shown in the form of the carrier which is illustrated in FIGURES to 12 of Patent No. 3,140,797. Also, the carrier can be made with a separate handle glued in between and protruding through a slit in integral longitudinal partition panels just above the cross partition straps.
I claim:
1. A cellular article carrier formed from a flexible paperboard blank which is cut and scored to provide, when set up, a bottom wall, upstanding side walls hinged to the side edges of the bottom wall, end walls hinged to opposite end edges of said side walls, a multi-ply, longitudinal partition and handle structure hinged at its opposite ends to the end walls and cell defining cross partition straps connected on vertical hinge lines at opposite ends thereof to the side walls and said longitudinal partition and handle structure, said cross partition straps having their outermost top edges inclined downwardly toward the hinge connection thereof with said side walls, and vertically disposed cross partition panels hinged to the inclined top edges of certain of said cross partition straps and depending therefrom to adjacent the bottom wall whereby to provide for separation of articles in said cells and the adjoining cells by said cross partition straps and said depending cross partition panels.
2. A cellular article carrier formed from a flexible paperboard blank which is cut and scored to provide, when set up, a foldable bottom Wall, upstanding side walls hinged to the side edges of the bottom walls, end walls hinged to opposite end edges of said side walls, a multiply, longitudinal partition and handle structure hinged at its opposite ends to the end walls and cross partition strap members connected on vertical hinge lines at opposite ends thereof to the side walls and said longitudinal partition and handle structure so as to provide article receiving cells on each side of said partition and handle structure, said cross partition strap members having top edge portions inclined toward the hinge connection thereof with said side walls, and vertically disposed supplemental cross partition panels folded downwardly from an integral hinged connection with the inclined top edge portions of a pair of said cross partition strap members which are disposed on opposite sides of said longitudinal partition and handle structure, and said supplemental cross partition panels having a depending portion thereof extending from the side wall at least half the width of the cells whereby to separate articles in said cells.
3. A cellular article carrier formed from a flexible paperboard blank which is cut and scored to provide, when set up, a foldable bottom Wall, upstanding side walls hinged to the side edges of the bottom wall, end Walls hinged to opposite end edges of said side walls, a multiply, longitudinal partition and handle structure hinged at its opposite ends to the end walls and cross partition strap members connected on longitudinally spaced, vertical hinge lines at opposite ends thereof to the side walls and said longitudinal partition and handle structure which divide the space on each side of said partition and handle structure into cells of equal size, said cross strap members having their outermost top edges inclined toward said side walls, and vertically disposed cross partition panels integrally hinged to inclined top edges of said cross partition strap members at one end of the carrier and extending therefrom to adjacent the bottom wall whereby to provide for separation by said cross partition strap members and said depending cross partition panels of articles in said cells from articles in the adjoining cells.
4. An article carrier comprising in the completed and erected condition thereof, a bottom wall panel, a pair of upstanding side wall panels, a pair of end wall panels connected along upright corner forming hinge lines at each end of the carrier to corresponding ends of the side Wall panels and extending in end wall forming relation between the same, an upright longitudinal partition structure connected at its opposite ends on upright hinge lines to the adjacent inner edges of the pairs of end wall panels, said longitudinal partition structure comprising pairs of longitudinal partition panels at each end thereof which are connected in oppositely disposed relation and integrally hinged to the adjacent inner edges of a pair of end wall panels, cross partition strap members connected on spaced vertical hinge lines to said longitudinal partition structure and to said side walls so as to divide said carrier into article receiving cells of equal size on each side of said longitudinal partition structure, supplemental cross partition panels integrally hinged to the top edge portions of certain of said cross partition strap members which are spaced from the end wall panels at one end of the carrier and folded down into a transverse plane and supplemental cross partition panels taken from the longitudinal partition panels at the other end of the carrier and folded into a transverse plane on vertical hinge lines which are spaced from the end wall panels and which coincide approximately with the hinge lines connecting a pair of cross partition strap members and the longitudinal partition structure, said supplemental cross partition panels extending from said cross partition strap members to adjacent said bottom wall panel and each having a dimension in the direction transversely of the carrier which is at least half the corresponding dimension of the associated cross partition strap member.
5. An article carrier comprising in the completed and erected condition thereof, a bottom wall panel, a pair of upstanding side wall panels, a pair of end wall panels connected along upright corner forming hinge lines at each end of the carrier to corresponding ends of the side wall panels and extending in end wall forming relation between the same, an upright longitudinal partition structure connected at its opposite ends on upright hinge lines to the adjacent inner edges of the pairs of end wall panels, said longitudinal partition structure comprising pairs of longitudinal partition panels at each end thereof which are connected in oppositely disposed relation and integralasaaass 7 ly hinged to the adjacent inner edges of a pair of end wall panels, pairs of cross partition strap members spaced from each end of the carrier which are connected on vertical hinge lines to said longitudinal partition structure and to top margins of said side walls said hinge lines being spaced longitudinally in the area on each side of said longitudinal partition structure into article receiving cells, cross partition panels integrally hinged to the top edge portions of certain of said cross partition strap members which are spaced from the end wall panels at one end of the carrier and folded down into transverse planes and cross partition panels hinged to the longitudinal partition panels which are spaced from the end wall panels at the other end of the carrier and folded into transverse planes with the hinge lines coinciding approximately with the hinge lines connecting the cross partition strap members and the longitudinal partition structure, said cross partition panels being secured to the associated cross partition strap members and extending to adjacent said bottom wall panel and having a dimension in the direction transversely of the carrier which is at least half the corresponding dimension of the cross partition strap members.
6. An article carrier comprising in the completed and erected condition thereof, a bottom wall panel, a pair of upstanding side wall panels, a pair of end wall panels connected along upright corner forming hinge lines at each end of the carrier to corresponding ends of the side wall panels and extending in end Wall forming relation between the same, an upright longitudinal partition structure connected at its opposite ends on upright hinge lines to the adjacent inner edges of the pairs of end wall panels, said longitudinal partition structure comprising pairs of longitudinal partition panels at each end thereof which are connected in oppositely disposed relation and integrally hinged to the adjacent inner edges of a pair of end wall panels, cross partition strap members connected on spaced vertical hinge lines to said longitudinal partition structure and to said side walls so as to divide said carrier into article receiving cells of equal size on each side of said longitudinal partition structure, said cross partition strap members having inclined top edge portions and cross partition panels hinged to the inclined top edge portions of certain of said cross partition strap members and folded down into transverse planes, and cross partition panels taken from the longitudinal partition panels and folded into transverse planes on vertical hinge lines coinciding approximately with the hinge lines connecting certain of the cross partition strap members and the longitudinal partition structure.
7. An article carrier comprising in the completed and erected condition thereof, a bottom wall panel, a pair of upstanding side wall panels, a pair of end wall panels connected along upright corner forming hinge lines at each end of the carrier to corresponding ends of the side wall panels and extending in end wall forming relation between the same, an upright longitudinal partition structure connected at its opposite ends on upright hinge lines to the adjacent inner edges of the pairs of end wall panels, said longitudinal partition structure comprising pairs of longitudinal partition panels at each end thereof which i are connected in oppositely disposed relation and integrally hinged to the adjacent inner edges of a pair of end wall panels, cross partition strap members connected on vertical hinge lines to said longitudinal partition structure and to said side walls, said hinge lines being spaced so as to divide the area on each side of said longitudinal partition structure into article receiving cells, said cross partition strap members having inclined top edge portions, cross partition panels integrally hinged to the inclined top edge portions of said cross partition strap members at one end of the carrier and folded down into engagement with said cross partition strap members and depending below the same, cross partition panels integrally hinged to the longitudinal partition panels at the other end of the carrier and folded on vertical hinge lines substantially coinciding with the hinge lines connecting the cross partition strap members to the longitudinal partition structure, said cross partition panels extending below said cross partition strap members to adjacent said bottom wall panel and each having a dimension in the direction transversely of the carrier which is at least half the corresponding dimension of the associated cross partition strap member, one of said longitudinal partition panels at one end of the carrier having an extension which is disposed between the center cells and which has a dimension in the longitudinal direction of the carrier which is no less than half the corresponding dimension of the center cells.

A paperboard blank cut and scored to divide the same into a plurality of panels which, when folded and set up, provide a cellular article carrier, said blank being divided by parallel score lines into a bottom wall forming section and two side wall and partition and handle forming sections, each of said last mentioned blank sections being divided by cutting lines and hinge forming score lines into a side wall panel, a handle and partition panel, a pair of connecting cross straps between the side Wall panel and the handle and partition panel, end wall panels at opposite ends of the side wall panel and a cross partition panel which is taken from the area adjoining one end of the handle and partition panel and which is separated therefrom by a cutting line which is parallel with the cutting line defining the top edge of the side wall panel and which is spaced outwardly therefrom toward the edge of the blank a distance at least one half the width of the adjacent end wall panel, and said cross partition panel being hinged on a score line extending diagonally from the top edge of the side wall panel outwardly in the direction of the handle and partition panel which score line defines a portion of the top edge of one of said pair of connecting cross straps.

Claims (1)

1. A CELLULAR ARTICLE CARRIER FORMED FROM A FLEXIBLE PAPERBOARD BLANK WHICH IS CUT AND SCORED TO PROVIDE, WHEN SET UP, A BOTTOM WALL, UPSTANDING SIDE WALLS HINGED TO THE SIDE EDGES OF THE BOTTOM WALL, END WALLS HINGED TO OPPOSITE END EDGES OF SAID SIDE WALLS, A MULTI-PLY, LONGITUDINAL PARTITION AND HANDLE STRUCTURE HINGED AT ITS OPPOSITE ENDS TO THE END WALLS AND CELL DEFINING CROSS PARTITION STRAPS CONNECTED ON VERTICAL HINGE LINES AT OPPOSITE ENDS THEREOF TO THE SIDE WALLS AND SAID LONGITUDINAL PARTITION AND HANDLE STRUCTURE, SAID CROSS PARTITION STRAPS HAVING THEIR OUTERMOST TOP EDGES INCLINED DOWNWARDLY TOWARD THE HINGE CONNECTION THEREOF WITH SAID WALLS, AND VERTICALLY DISPOSED CROSS PARTITION PANELS HINGED TO THE INCLINED TOP EDGES OF CERTAIN OF SAID CROSS PARTITION STRAPS AND DEPENDING THEREFROM TO ADJACENT THE BOTTOM WALL WHEREBY TO PROVIDE FOR SEPARATION OF ARTICLES IN SAID CELLS AND THE ADJOINING CELLS BY SAID CROSS PARTITION STRAPS AND SAID DEPENDING CROSS PARTITION PANELS.
