In a joint structure between two pieces of leather or like sheet material, one piece 10 is formed with plies 12, 13 of a combined thickness not greater than that of piece 10, and another piece 11 is formed with a tab which has a head 16 or is otherwise shaped so as to afford abutments directed towards a main portion of piece 10, the tab being inserted between plies 12, 13 which are then secured together by adhesive; the abutments engage re-united regions of the plies to resist withdrawal of the tab. In the joint construction shown, the head 16 is inserted through a slit 19 adjacent the edge 14 of one ply 13 of another piece 10, and is secured by applying adhesive to the inner faces of the two plies 12, 13 of piece 10, and to head 16 if necessary, and pressing together the plies and the head. Plies 12, 13 may be formed by skivering the edge of a homogeneous sheet, or the sheet may be formed of laminations which are temporarily separated or left unbonded in the area of the joint. Instead of entering a slit such as 19, a tab may be inserted directly between the plies at edge 14. In another construction, both pieces have one or more tabs and one or more localities at which the material is divided into plies, such localities lying opposite the tabs of the other piece.
