Abstract

1400204 Two part couplings BUNKER RAMO CORP 1 Sept 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 40749/72 Heading H2E In a two part coupling 10, 12 mating members 26, 33 are made, respectively, of PTFE or similar self-lubricating fluorocarbon which becomes soft at high temperatures and of metal, aromatic polysulphone or other material which remains rigid at high temperatures. This combination of materials is stated to avoid the locking of the two parts together, due to distortion of two mating PTFE members, in a prior art arrangement. As shown, member 33 is of metal and also serves as an outer contact, mating with spring fingers 27. The PTFE member 26 comprises a ridge 30 which becomes squashed to provide a friction grip and a seal. Pin contact 14 is held in position by a collar 53 and by a beryllium-copper clip 54 which has portions 55, 57 to prevent rearward and forward movement of contact 14, respectively. Clip 54 is in turn held by a rear insulator 62. After a cable has been connected, the rear end of the connector 10 is filled with potting compound to retain members 62, 54, 14 and 26. Socket contact 16 comprises a split portion 80, biased by a spring 83 and a hood 84 to limit outward deflection. Contact 16 is fixed by means of an irregular surface 25 and is connected to a ring 24. Alternatively a socket contact (79, Fig. 2, not shown) may be in the connector half having the PTFE member (40) and may be fixed by a clip like the pin contact 14. One connector half (15, Fig. 2, not shown) may incorporate a glass insulator (85) as part of a hermetic seal.
