Abstract

1400157 Polymeric foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59217/71 Heading C3R Polymeric foams, especially polyurethane foams are prepared by ejecting a mixture containing a polymer and/or prepolymer which is cured by contact with moisture and an inert blowing agent from a container in which the polymer and/or prepolymer is stored under pressure and injecting moisture into the stream of the mixture before it is exposed to the free atmosphere. It is preferred that the mixture be originally a liquid and for the moisture to be injected into the mixture whilst it is still a liquid at a position sufficiently close to the position where it is ejected from the container to ensure that the mixture remains substantially uncured at the moment of ejection from the container and this may be achieved by injecting the moisture into the mixture as the latter emerges from the container into the delivery hose. The moisture may be introduced as a vapour stream such as an air or nitrogen stream containing water vapour or as a jet of steam or an air/steam mixture. Ideally the pressure at which the moisture is injected is the same as that at which the mixture is ejected from the container. Conventional foam-forming polyurethane mixtures curable by contact with moisture are used.
