Abstract

1400096 Boring earth &c A S JOVANOVIC 10 Sept 1973 [6 June 1973] 26918/73 Heading E1F A sampler for soft sediment comprises a head 1 adapted to be connected to a drill string, inner and outer tubes 11, 8 carried by the head, a cutter 7 having limited axial movement relative to the head, a socket 6 fixed to the head, shutters 4 pivoted to the socket and moved to retain a sample in the tube 11 by members 2 connected to the head. The head is connected to a tube 9 supporting the tube 8 with limited axial movement. The tube 9 is connected by the members 2 and springs 3 to the shutters. The tube 11 is of plastics and is supported by the socket. The parts of the sampler are positioned as shown when being lowered into, or removed from, a borehole. When a sample is being taken sediment pressure causes the cutter and socket to move upwardly relative to the head with the resultant opening of the shutters. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the tube 8, member 2 and springs 3 are fixed relative to the head, and the socket 6, cutter and shutters have limited axial movement relative to the head.
