Abstract

1343808 Boring earth &c M P LEBOURG 19 April 1971 [24 March 1970] 23916/71 Heading E1F Coring apparatus comprises means 30 for cutting a core 60, a collapsible sleeve 53 above the cutting means, means 49 to introduce fluid (preferably drilling fluid) under pressure to the outside of the sleeve for maintaining the sleeve collapsed until the core is received therein, and means 79 to exhaust the fluid as the core enters the sleeve. An inner tube 47 is rotatable in an outer tube 21 carrying a diamond bit 30, the drilling fluid being supplied to the bit through a passage 20 between the tubes. The sleeve is fixed to the tube 47 by a ring 58 and to a member 37 fixed to the tube 47. The annulus 67 surrounding the sleeve is connected to the passage 20 by a valve 49 permitting flow from the passage to the annulus and by a valve 79 permitting flow from the annulus to the passage. The pressure at P 1 is greater than the pressure at P 2 which in view of channels 61 is under the same pressure as the core. Prior to drilling, the fluid flows to the annulus and collapses the sleeve, and on drilling the core enters the sleeve to increase the pressure in the annulus and open valve 79, a small pressure remaining in the annulus. With the fluid still circulating drilling is stopped, the bit is slowly lifted from the hole bottom, someof the core falls out of the sleeve, and some of the fluid passes through valve 49 to collapse the lower portion of the sleeve and seal the core within the sleeve. The fluid circulation is stopped and the apparatus is withdrawn from the borehole. The sleeve is constructed to collapse laterally, has longitudinally reinforcement, and is coated with antifriction material on its inside. The fluid may be liquid or gas and an independent supply of fluid may be supplied to collapse the sleeve. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the core tube 103 is pushed into the sea-bed by a weight 101 and the pressure on the sleeve is maintained by a differential piston 104 and is released into the sea through valve 105. A modified hand manipulated device is suitable for taking cores from beaches.
